Winter Tree ID Workshop for Beginners

Are you somebody who loves trees but are not sure what you're looking at? Do you want to learn more about the trees we have around us and how to identify them and understand some of their uses? If so keep reading.

In winter, for many of our trees, their leaves have long since fallen, which makes identifying them a bit different. For this workshop we will focus on buds and bark as well as other clues which will give you a good foundation on which to expand your tree knowledge.

As part of this workshop we will teach you about tree biology and show you how to use different references to aid identification, and you will be given handouts as well as aid recommendations.

What to expect. Upon arrival you will be met at the campsite reception outide Hatch 22 (it's near the main car parking area). You will be given a form to fill in case of ememergency. At 1030hrs we will take a walk to our HQ where a short lecture on tree biology and other useful infomation will be had. We can also warm up a little around our delightful fire altar and have a brew at this point. Afterwards, armed with some new information we will go for a walk stopping to look at the diverse array of trees and carry out some detective work. We will break for lunch at around 1230hrs under our canopy at HQ and refreshments (tea/coffee/biscuits) will be provided, we advise everyone bring a packed lunch. After lunch we will do more investigating and look at more trees.

Please dress approprietary with spare gloves, hat, scarf... and have suitable footwear on as we will be conducting the entirety of the workshop outside. Toilet facilities are available to you throughout the workshop but know you may have to walk a little way to get there. Please aim to arrive 15 mins before the workshop begins as this allows everybody time to settle in and fill out the necessary forms. This workshop is suitable for anyone over the age of 16, and please note that walking at a moderately slow pace on uneven ground is required. Unfortunately at this time of year, due to uneven and slippery ground, we advise that this workshop isn't suitable for people with poor mobilty.
